The Old St Beghian
  July 2026

From Our President

Darryl Davies (FS 62-68)

Tempus fugit. It feels like only yesterday that I wrote my piece for the January Bulletin, yet I have attended several events since then.

In February, we held a very successful Cumbria branch dinner at the splendid Armathwaite Hall Hotel near Keswick. My thanks go to Simon Steele (FS 85-89), the manager, for making it possible. Seventy-six guests attended and enjoyed excellent food, fine wine, and good company. They came from far and wide, including Kele Mbagwu (SH 82-84), who travelled from Nigeria.

In May, I attended the London dinner at the Civil Service Club, which Martin Birkett (SH 83-90) organised excellently. Twenty-three people attended, and the evening continued long after the plates had been cleared.

In June, we celebrated Old St Beghians’ Day. After the Committee Meeting and AGM, we moved to the chapel, where the Revd Canon Paul Maybury (FS 72-77) led the service. Lunch was excellent, and in the afternoon Eton Fives and Music in the Quad proved popular. My particular thanks go to Pam Rumney, whose organisational skills continue to amaze me, and to the catering staff for all they did throughout the day.

I am very much looking forward to the North East Sunday luncheon on 15th November at Corbridge, organised by Jonathan Steele (FS 82-87).

As Old St Beghians, it is important that we help both the Society and the school continue to flourish. We can do this by encouraging more women and younger members to attend events. The golfing society, in particular, needs new talent. I would also encourage members to pay their annual subscriptions and perhaps join the 200 Club.

I hope you all have an enjoyable summer holiday.

Darryl W Davies.
